Simple Horse Training
Natural and Gentle Horse Training
-
Purpose:
Horses are very large animals, and it is their massive size that makes some people think it must take a lot of effort and strength to train them, but nothing could be further from the truth. Horses are large, but training has nothing to do with controlling a horse's body, and it has everything to do with simply shaping a horse's mind.
- As for a horse's mind, horses are prey animals, so what they naturally want is a safe and predictable environment. To a horse, a safe and predictable environment isn't just knowing where to find food and water; it's having wide open space with room to run from a predator, and it's also being a member of a herda group in which all members understand and communicate with one another through mutual body language, thereby giving a horse a strong sense of safety and predictability. In other words, to a horse, his environment is a matter of survival.
- When it comes to training a horse, however, a typical trainer will not only remove that horse from his herd and, therefore, from his safe and predictable environment but will also place a halter and rope on him, thereby making it impossible for him to flee any perceived danger. Under such circumstances, is it any wonder that training has its challenges where a trainer has to resort to physically controlling the horse?
- When encountering a challenge in your own training, you might search online for training advice, which can yield numerous horse training videos, predominantly on YouTube. While many of these videos provide valuable information and thorough explanations, they lack the prior training that the horse featured in the video underwent prior to the recording of the video. In your own training, you may attempt to replicate the techniques demonstrated in a video, only to find that your horse becomes confused and frustrated, as it has not received the foundational training that the horse in the video received. Furthermore, if you try to imitate what you see in one YouTube video on one occasion and then try to imitate what you see from another trainer in another video on a different day, your horse is, most likely, never going to know what to expect from you.
- So the purpose in creating this site is to show that horse training can be simple. This horse training method is simple for you because, no matter what you are teaching your horse to do, you are using the same method in all your training. And this horse training method is simple for your horse because it removes your horse from one safe and predictable environment (his herd) and places him into yet another safe and predictable environment for training.
